The eighteenth century was winding to the island of Menorca. The continuing disputes over control of the Mediterranean made the island passed through British hands, French and Spanish. Being under British rule for 74 years of this century and greatly influenced many features left an imprint on the island, mainly in the area surrounding the Port of Mahon.

Nowadays, several buildings are still kept, many of which can be visited since they are open to cultural visits, or used as institutional offices or as accommodation premises. Throughout that time, also a number of defence towers were erected along the coast as well as many infrastructures. Menorcans still keep some customs from the British period, such as dances, expressions, traditions, etc.

We are currently developing the British Menorca Network, which will bring together all those cultural, architectural, language elements related to the British past of Menorca. Keep checking this website for further developments.
